Karate is beneficial in many ways. It promotes physical health and fitness, it fosters confidence, and it causes increased flexibility and dexterity. But does karate work as self-defense?
There a numerous styles of karate, and each style has pros and cons when it comes to self-defense. Firstly, only some forms of karate practice kumite, or sparring. Without practicing any combat, self-defense tactics are very hard to apply in real-world scenarious. However, there are plenty of karate styles to teach combat skills. These styles would benefit any karateka in learning self-defense.
Karate focuses largely on kata, choreographed stances performed to increase strength and promote the patterns of method. These kata can help teach self-defense because it engrains the karate stances and moves, thus making a person more likely to stay calm and know what to do in a bad situation. However, the kata are very set patterns, very ritualized, and not realistic. It may be difficult for someone to apply the kata when the need came, because it was only very performed in a controlled environment.
Karate would not harm a person's ability to defend himself if the need arose. However, karate's main focus is not self-defense, so it should not provide a false sense of security. Karate can be focused in self-defense classes to teach the most relevant aspects of karate to those solely interested in self-defense. Karate is beneficial in self-defense, but must be applied effectively in order to be successful.
