A dojo is a physical training facility, often used for the practice of karate. Dojo literally means place of the way. Dojo can also be used for meditation and formal karate occasions, in addition to practice.
Dojo are meant to be well-cared for by the students of the Dojo. The student body should support, maintain, and clean the Dojo to show respect for the instructional staff of the Dojo. This tradition of seniority and rank is also continues by the various doors in a Dojo. Students typically enter the Dojo through the upper left corner of the Dojo, while intructors enter through the upper right corner. Visitors of the Dojo also have a designated area depending on their karate rank. A Dojo often displays many important karate artifacts and accessories: certificates to authorize karate and vertain styles, taiko drums, armor, weapons and training gear-- all are an important part of karate and a Dojo.
The Dojo is not just for practicing karate. Dojo are formal centers for karate training, student examinations, and other karate functions. The Doco is central to the heart of karate and martial arts.
