The saying "the best offense is a good defense" is the perfect way to describe the merits of using karate as self-defense. Karate is based on developing a good defense. In traditional karate, you never take the first strike, you take time to focus on blocks, stances, and power when you need to fight back.

There are many attacks from which you can defend yourself using karate. Any punch, hook or cut can be interrupted and thrown back at your assailant to you give you the upper hand. Karate will help you to further develop your reflexes so you can react faster. Your natural reflexes and intuitions are some of your sharpest weapons. If someone attacks you with a hit, your first move is to to duck out of the way and deflect their hit with a karate chop or block.

There are also many karate techniques that are useful if you are attacked by surprise. If an attacker is using the strength of their arms, you can attach their weakest points with karate strikes. An assailant's eyes, groin, stomach, and head are often left unprotected, and you can use that to your advantage. Use your feet to turn to your advantage and then attack their open weak points.

There are many self-defense karate classes open to students of all needs. No matter your age or expertise-level, karate can be a benefit in improving your line of self-defense.
