Goju-Ryu is one of the traditional Okinawan styles of karate, and displays the oldest martial arts traditions. It was founded by Miyagi Chojun Kensei Goju-Ryu. It focuses on breathing techniques, called Ibuki, which are a way to harmonize the mind and body, creating a more efficient person who is in a total state of awareness.
Goju-Ryu karate uses methods that focus on body conditioning and strengthening, basic fighting approaches, and partner work. Those who practice Goju-Ryu combine kicks and close hand punches with open-hand circular techniques. Goju-Ryu also uses locks, throws, takedowns, and grappling.
Goju-Ryu Karate finds a balance between the stiff and hard traditions and the soft and gentle ways to find a perfect and graceful combination full of fighting spirit. Golu-Ryu is the most Chinese-influenced form of karate and is in a constant state of harmony between hard and positive (Go) and the soft and negative (Ju). Goju-Ryu karate is not meant to be views as a sport, and should not be used for sparring. Goju-Ryu Kata begin with defensive motions and end with defensive motions. Goju-Ryu, as with all karate, is also the art of disciplining the mind and the body to find a perfect harmony with each other.
