I've been practicing karate for about 15 years now, and I have no doubts I could take care of anyone who thought about laying a finger on me with my martial arts training. But my little sister just moved to Chicago, and I'm think she should take some karate classes as a little self-defense training. Does anyone have any recommendations for places to go in Chicago for karate? Has anyone trained in karate for self-defense purposes only and had success?

when practiced seriously, karate is the best form of self-defense. it enhances your reflexes and your dexterity, let alone your strength and knowledge of combat.

I think that's one of the best things a woman can do is to take karate lessons for self-defense.

John De Pasquall is the name you want to find.   He's has over 9,000 students and is the best in Chicago for Karate.   I see him at the USANKF Nationals every year.   Tell him Sensei Green from Green's Karate sent you!

With all due respect, I studied Karate for over 12 years and Kempo for about 3 years. Karate is great for Self defense but you may want to expose her to other areas in the martial arts. Some arts are better for self defense than others. No disrespect to my fellow practitioners in Karate. Osu. Good luck. Wish her well.

I'f you want her to just know how to protect herself then I suggest krav maga, It's really good style for self defence, and since you know karate you could teach her yourself.

Secrets Of The Self Defense Groin Kick

The self defense groin kick is without a doubt a valuable technique in close quarters combat.  (Any guy who’s ever come crashing down on the crossbar of his bicycle knows that.)  But there’s a bunch of mistakes that many martial artists make when executing a groin kick for self defense – mistakes that can actually end up hurting YOU as a result if you don’t do pay close attention to these aspects of your technique.

Self Defense Groin Kick Secret #1: Use In Close Quarters Combat!

Don’t go for a groin kick from far away!  As men, we have a subconscious radar that register when someone is going to hit our groin.  This makes it harder to deliver an effective groin kick because he’s more likely to turn to avoid the kick as an instinctive reaction.

Self Defense Groin Kick Secret #2: Beware The Headbutt!

Self defense groin kicks, when used as taught in most “traditional” training settings, use a “linear” approach that places the martial artist directly in front of their attacker. But the way the body naturally reacts when hit with a groin kick is to instantly bend forward.

If you attempt a groin kick for self defense when you’re right in front of your attacker, this places you right in the way of your attacker’s head as it comes crashing down in an involuntary reaction.  Needless to say, you don’t want to transform  your groin kick against your attacker into a “headbutt” that takes YOU out of the fight.  This IS for “self defense” remember!

Self Defense Groin Kick Secret #3: Attack HIGH First!

You can stop the natural “headbutt” reaction by first striking high to your attacker’s body.  This also makes sure that he doesn’t see the groin kick coming and you can deliver more power in your technique.

Self Defense Groin Kick Secret #4: Shift Your Body!

The secret to proper execution for a self defense groin kick then is to kick while shifting your body slightly to the SIDE as you kick.  When you execute this technique in this way, you can actually deliver more power AND make sure you’re out of the way should your attacker’s head lurch forward.

Consider all of these techniques the next time you train for the self defense groin kick!Smile

I've also been practicing karate for about 10 years and now i've attained 1st dan. I highly recommend karate as a very good self-defense martial art.

Hey Austin, i think karate can't be learnt on the online. U'll need a very good sensei to teach you. Learning karate online, in my opnion, is impossible and useless

Austin- I have been studying martial arts for over 25 years now and I have been teaching for about 20.  While I agree having a great instructor next to you every step of the way is ideal, it's not always possible.  Due to times, location, and cost, many people are turning to online programs to learn martial arts.  Check this one out, the mini-course is free and hundreds of people train here every month.

Karate the concept of the (Kara) Empty (Te) Hand/Mind. This is a Martial art that is used for basic ground of Mind and Spirit, but for now days if you need an explosive force for "outside" you must combine.
